A true story. (You just couldn't make this up)

In 2003, our UFFA Cup final year, I went on a bus from Shawlands to the Celtic v Blackburn game at Ewood Park.
... We won 2-0 and wanted to celebrate after the match, so we asked the driver to take us to Blackpool. At first he refused and after we had a whip round and gave him 80 quid he agreed to take us for a few hours.

I can't remember the name of the pub, but we were in there a few hours, got a wee lock in and bevied the night away. Anyway, the driver came into the pub and told us to get ready to leave for Glasgow, we had five minutes. We were well pished and slowly and drunkenly made our way to the bus. Read more

First taste of FA Cup defeat

Posted by - Dean

Date : 04/12/11

It was FA cup 1st round day and Freddie my 5 year old son was attending his very first FA cup fixture. A home draw against Torquay had given us hope we could progress and head towards a 3rd round tie with one of the so called ‘big boys’!

Myself being a suffering Spireite for 30 odd years knew exactly what was heading my son’s way, his first of many tastes of FA cup 1st round defeats. Chesterfield have never been a good cup team, specially the FA cup with somebody ones telling me that before our run to the semi final in 1997, we had officially the worst record in said competition.

Following an awful display against the worse team to visit the b2net this season, we lost 1-0, much to the immense disappointment of my boy who was dreaming of Manchester United in the 3rd round.

His comment walking back to the car summed up his feelings about the game and team, when I asked him what he thought, the reply was “they should knock the ground down daddy!”. Bit extreme but I got the point.

Manchester Stunner!

If you have followed Premier League action for any length of time you already know that Manchester United is King and everyone else is way behind.  Maybe things are changing.  After watching Sunday’s game between Manchester United and Manchester City it could be that things will be different this year.

6-1 Slaughter

It is not only that Manchester United lost to Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, it is the score.  Manchester City completely humiliated United in a game that was never really competitive, like when you play bingo online for money.  Listening to United manager Alex Ferguson after the game you know just how bad it was. He called it the worst loss of his career.

City Fans Shouting

After Sunday’s game it was Manchester City fans who were shouting “Top of the league!” “And that’s a fact!”   The 6-1 defeat for United at home was the worst home loss since 1955.  Is this the season that City takes away the crown from their bitter rival?  They now lead United by 5 points in the Premier League standings. The 6-1 win by City was the 161st meeting between the two clubs since 1881.

Noisy Neighbors

You almost have to laugh at the rivalry between City and United because it has not been much of rivalry lately. United has been so dominant that people have just ignored City.  That is not the case this year.  “People called us noisy neighbors, and here we are,” City’s Micah Richards said, “This victory is what dreams are made of.”  The two squads are separated by only four miles as City is located in the northeast part of Manchester while United is on the south side.

United has not looked like a champion so far this season. They look more like a person hoping to hit the jackpot while playing bingo.  It didn’t work out that way on Sunday as it was City hitting it big.  After United’s Jonny Evans got a red card it was over.

Manchester City has not won the Premier League since 1968 but this could be the season.  United looks vulnerable and everything is in place for City to win it all.

Having read several great stories here, I thought I would share one of my favourites of an away day.

Myself and my Brother are both QPR fans, and always try to go to a few away games. Back in 2005, our beloved Hoops were away at Sheffield United - 1h away, perfect.

So we booked the train & the tickets and planned a quiet night on the friday to prepare for an earlyish start on matchday. Read more

So to kick of the new season, here’s the first story sent in from an avid Spireite fan - Marcia. She decided to attend the Wroxham v Norwich pre-season friendly, and why wouldn’t you? Wearing here Chesterfield top with pride, she happened upon a fellow Spireite fan also at the game. Low and behold, the first person she bumped into at the b2net for Saturday’s pre season affair with Hull City was the exact same chap! It’s a very small world at times.

Football Players Who’ve Traded the Pitch for the Felt

Plenty of new fans have taken up Texas Holdem poker  in recent years, including tons of present and former athletes. Poker and sports is a natural fit, as it appeals to the competitive nature of players and is also a great way to kill time on the team bus, plane, or at hotels during away games. Add in some of the extra money burning a hole in players' pockets and you have the perfect recipe for poker, with players from nearly every sport trying their hand at poker from time to time.

While many athletes may dabble in poker, the list is relatively short as far as past and present professional athletes who have had real success at the highest level of poker. Some of poker's most famous players played sports when they were younger -- such as Doyle Brunson and Patrik Antonius -- but very few professional athletes have made a serious go of it on the poker circuit. Of those that have had success at the felt, footballers have been well-represented, with Teddy Sheringham, Tony Cascarino, and Jan Vang Sørensen notching some major scores in big poker tournaments around the world.

Teddy Sheringham has been a regular on the poker tournament circuit since 2005, taking up the game in earnest after he retired from football in 2002. Sheringham's best showing came in late 2010 in an European Poker Tour (EPT) event in Vilamoura, where he finished 5th for a payday of nearly $120,000; it was his third time to finish in the money in 2010 at EPT events, with other cashes coming at EPT London and the EPT Grand Final at Monte Carlo. Prior to 2010 his best showing was a 14th pace finish worth just over $66,000 at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe main event.

Sheringham's former Millwall teammate Tony Cascarino has had his own share of success at the poker tables, where he's turned a lifelong fondness for gambling and cards into poker success. Sponsored in some tournaments by online poker  site PokerStars, Cascarino's biggest score came in 2009 when he won the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Grand Final for a $283,412 payday. Jan Vang Sørensen, though, takes the crown of the former footballers as far as poker success, as he's claimed two bracelets at the World Series of Poker and has won well over $2 million on the poker tournament circuit since he began playing seriously in the mid 1990s.

So its the 24th of August, Hartlepool United away in the carling cup 2nd round. Yes straight away you might ask why we are going well to be totally honest none of us knew the answer to that question, id like to say we had better things to do on a Tuesday neet but if were completely straight with you we didn't, we would most likely be sitting on Enfield f*cking park in the rain having a good laugh at hassett, the guys tremendous as you will read about in what turned out to be the best, worst and completely disastrous away day. The 1997 FA Cup run

Posted by - STAVELEY SPIRE

Date : 02/02/11

It’s 1997 and Chesterfield had got to the fourth round of the FA cup and been drawn away to Bolton. An office colleague suggested we arrange a trip as “we’re not likely to get much further”. We hired a twelve seater mini bus and I agreed to drive, I set off from work early to collect the van whilst they all retired to the Sun Inn to await my return. To say they were merry on my return was an understatement. Read more

Chester & Peterborough (Late 1970’s)

In 1975 I passed my driving test & as I had always travelled to away games on the bus I decided me & my mates could go in the car instead. As I was still a novice driver my timing wasn’t great. We were at Chester so at 10 am we set off. At 12 o'clock we were on the outskirts of Chester so we stopped at a pub for a pint or 2 or 3 or 4 or cant remember. Read more

Ahead of Chesterfield’s re-arranged game at Priestfield, we re-live the nightmare journey the team had trying to get back from the original postponed fixture at Gillingham just before Christmas 2010. Auto Glass Trophy FInal

This story happened when Carlisle were playing Birmingham City in the auto glass trophy final at the Old Wembley. I was just a kid at the time and when walking down to the ground I thought it would be a good idea to put my leg in-between two metal barriers at the ground to see if i could get my leg to the bottom. You’ll never ban a Wanderers fan

In 1987 Wolves fell into the fourth division and whilst times were hard, new grounds and experiences were visited! We played Torquay utd away this season and some idiot made it a  saturday night kickoff! Wolves won 2-1 amid riotous scenes (sea air and Wolves fans !!) Torquay were appalled at the behaviour and decided to ban us the following year. When the fixture came around (a tuesday night this time) the game was made membership only with none to Wolves FC. The chairman of Torquay made a statement in the Wolverhampton paper saying "don't bother coming as no Wolves fans will ever get into the ground!". Read more

I don’t know what it looked like from the Away End and I suppose Watford fans weren’t too bothered when their late winner hit the back of the net in the 85th minute but it was one of the most bizarre bank holiday games I have ever attended.

Do I not like that

Let me begin by saying that this is not a story about going to an away game, however it does in a round about way involve travel and it is rather unusual to say the least.

Let me transport you back to a Saturday afternoon in February 1998, Watford were flying high in what was then called Division 2 and I in my pre season ticket days wasn't at Vicarage Road that particular day. Sad as I was to not be at the game, little did I know that I would instead witness a turn of events that you just could not make up... Read more

Some years ago, we travelled about 4 1/2 hour journey to Hartlepool for a carling / Worthington cup tie. We arrived quite early for the game about 5 O'clock. The ground seemed very quiet and there wasn't many people knocking about, "its early though" we thought and made our way into the nearest pub containing about 4 people. Read more

Crewe versus Tottenham in the FA Cup.

Spurs crossed the ball into the penalty area and everyone jumped for it.

Massive collision of bodies and players from both sides laid out on the floor.

Both trainers run on.

Spurs trainer approaches his first injured player who is sat up and dazed.

He is about to treat the player when he notices another Spurs player unconscious a yard or two away.

As he leaves the first player he lays his hand on the players head.

Let me take you back, right back actually to Saturday 17th January 1981. It’s about 9.40am and like most teenagers I’m having a problem dragging my wiry little carcass out of bed!

I pop my head out from under the bed sheets, reach out and pull aside my bedroom curtains to get a glimpse of what it’s doing outside. It looks like another cold one, a thin layer of ice appears to have set on the outside of the window and small pools of condensation have started to settle on the window sill. Like most folk on our road double glazing was yet to grace the facade of our humble abode. Read more

"Daddy Is it time to go yet?" is the question I get for what seems the 1000th time from my 5 year old son. It can only be a Saturday morning and matchday!

My name is Dean Mansell and I am a self confessed Chesterfield fan. I was born, bred and lived in the town until approximately 4 years ago, when i moved with the family over to a quiet little village in North Lincolnshire. A tough decision at the time, not only due to leaving family and friends, but the fact that our then home in Tapton was a stones throw away from the planned and now reality of Chesterfield FC's fantastic new plush surroundings, the b2net stadium. What a difference a year makes! It was about this time last season where I and a record number of Chesterfield fans were playing the guessing game of when we would be crowned Champions of League Two.
